Miller, a 14-year-old boy, passed away on March 21 at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort near Manuel Antonio National Park. He was found unresponsive in the hotel room he shared with family members, some of whom had become ill the night before.
His family released a statement saying they have many questions but know that Miller passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 21. They described him as a young boy who loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. His family said they can’t imagine life without his smile.
On April 2, Costa Rican officials confirmed that Miller died from carbon monoxide poisoning during the family’s vacation. The toxicology tests showed that the amount of carbon monoxide in his system was high enough to be deadly.
At first, some thought the family’s sickness might have been due to food poisoning or an allergic reaction, but these were ruled out by doctors. Dr. Kevin Gannon, who was one of the first medics to arrive, confirmed the family had been sick and had vomited after dinner the night before. But the cause of Miller’s death couldn’t be explained right away.
The FBI worked with Costa Rican authorities to investigate, but the resort said no FBI agents had been on-site. Meanwhile, the resort lowered its room prices and closed the area where the gas leak was believed to have started, as a safety measure.
