JD Vance explains why Trump removed Mike Waltz from his position as national security adviser.
Vice President JD Vance recently spoke out about Mike Waltz’s exit from his role as National Security Advisor, clarifying that it wasn’t a firing but a reassignment. Waltz, who served as a congressman for Florida’s sixth district, was one of Donald Trump’s first appointments after his 2024 election win.
On May 1, Trump announced that Waltz would be leaving the role just days after completing his 100th day in office. Trump plans to nominate him as the next US Ambassador to the UN. Praising Waltz’s dedication, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “From his time on the battlefield to his work in Congress and as National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has always put our nation’s interests first. I’m confident he’ll continue to do so in his new role.”
Waltz decided to step down after being involved in a major security breach. The incident occurred when a journalist from The Atlantic was unintentionally added to a Signal group chat, where classified military plans for possible US strikes in Yemen were discussed. Waltz took full responsibility for the breach during an interview with Fox News, stating, “I put together the group. It’s humiliating. We will find the truth about it.”
Despite the incident, Trump chose not to fire Waltz and publicly supported him. However, insiders told ABC News that their relationship had been strained behind the scenes. Vice President JD Vance defended the decision to reassign Waltz to a different role.
