During a rally organized by her supporters, she recounted her version of events, expressing gratitude to those who supported her. ‘I want to express gratitude to everyone who stood behind me,’ she stated, emphasizing that only those who knew her well were willing to hear her account. ‘I have no intentions of behaving in that manner. I would never harm anybody. I’m not a fighter. I’m not even confrontational.’ Everett attributed the baton strike to an accidental occurrence during a highly competitive race.”
Everett explained that during her attempt to pass Tucker on a curved section of the track, their arms made repeated contact. She stated that her baton became lodged behind Tucker’s back as she tried to overtake her opponent. This caused her to shift her position, resulting in an accidental strike with the baton. ‘I fell off balance and when I used my arms for recovery she received the collision,’ Everett said, reiterating that the contact was unintentional.
Her parents have publicly supported her account of the incident. Community leaders, including James Boyd, president of the Portsmouth NAACP, also defended her at the rally. Boyd stated that Everett and her family had received persistent racial harassment and death threats since the event
