Elisabeth Moss has shared the disturbing item a colleague asked to keep from the set of The Handmaid’s Tale.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Elisabeth Moss talked about a funny and slightly awkward moment after filming the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The cast and crew were given the chance to take home items from the set, and Moss eagerly jumped on the opportunity.
“We got an email with a full list of props and costumes we could take,” she told Kimmel. “In a very mature way, I wrote back ‘dibs’ and listed everything I wanted.”
One of the items on her list? Offred’s special underwear. But Moss soon learned someone else had already claimed it.
“I was told that someone had already asked for it,” she said.
Kimmel was shocked. “Wait, someone asked for your custom underwear, and they wanted to keep it?” he said, clearly surprised.
Even more confused, Kimmel added: “Like, ‘I want Elisabeth’s underwear. I’m going to take it home and store it for a while.’”
“Hopefully!” Moss laughed in response. She admitted that storing the underwear would be “the best-case scenario.”
The Mad Men star also said she didn’t want to know who made the strange request, explaining, “I don’t want to know who wants my underwear… I have to work with these people.”
Kimmel didn’t drop it, calling the request “crazy” and hoping it was “a woman” who made it.
“Oh my god, I hope it’s a woman,” he said. “Someone made a formal request for your underwear, like, in writing, in an email shared with others. We need to know who this person is.”
As expected on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he even joked about a Hulu bonus feature revealing the mystery.
“You could add a little post-show on Hulu where you reveal who took the underwear,” he quipped. “Kind of like The Bachelor: Men Tell All special.”
But plot twist — the mystery didn’t last long. Speaking to PEOPLE at the Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 premiere on Monday, Moss revealed that the “underwear thief” came forward after seeing her interview.
“I think it’s so funny,” she said, but confirmed she wouldn’t be revealing the person’s identity. “I don’t want to out them publicly,” she explained, though she now knows “who it is.”
It turns out, the whole situation might have just been a misunderstanding.
“He told me it wasn’t exactly what we thought,” she said. “It’s not bad. It’s not as bad as we thought. He didn’t actually specifically ask for my underwear, which is good. So we’re good, guys.”
Crisis averted… sort of.
