Donald Trump hints at imposing new tariffs on the semiconductor industry as stock markets teeter on the edge.
The controversial president ramps up pressure on China, increasing tariffs and preparing for a potential trade war.
On April 13, Trump told reporters: “Tariffs will take effect in the not-too-distant future,” referring to new trade measures.
He added, “We’ll apply tariffs to semiconductors, chips, and more—just like we did with steel and automobiles.”
Donald Trump, 78, also said new pharmaceutical industry tariffs will roll out “very fast.”
Trump said the U.S. must produce its own drugs to avoid reliance on China during war or emergencies.
He stated that depending on foreign countries for medicine is a “bad idea.”
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his Vietnam visit, warned against escalating trade tensions.
Xi told media, “There are no winners in a trade or tariff war.”
He urged the U.S. to protect global supply chains and support multilateral trade systems.
Xi added, “Trade and tariff wars have no winners. Protectionism leads nowhere.”
The U.S. and China continue clashing over tariffs, despite Trump pausing hikes for 90 days.
Trump said over 75 countries asked for new trade negotiations, but he held firm on China.
He maintained a 145% import tax on Chinese goods.
In retaliation, Beijing halted exports of rare earth minerals and magnets used in cars, chips, and aerospace.
Kevin Hassett, Trump’s top economic adviser, called China’s move “concerning.”
He told reporters, “Rare earths play a small but critical role in the U.S. economy.”
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Trump will decide on future tariffs after the 90-day pause ends.
She claimed many countries rushed to negotiate, hoping to avoid Trump’s retaliatory tariffs.
Leavitt stated, “Phones have been ringing nonstop. Countries wisely avoided retaliation and earned a 90-day pause.”
She added, “We aim to strike fair, custom trade deals with each country before the deadline.”
Despite market volatility, Trump boasted on X: “Very exciting for America, and the World! It is moving along quickly.”
