There have been strange UFO sightings along the U.S. southern border — with one in particular raising eyebrows.
Dubbed “The Cigar,” this mysterious craft has baffled agents for years.
Now, Army veteran Bob Thompson, who spent nearly 15 years with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, has dropped a bombshell — and released shocking footage.
In an interview with NewsNation’s Ross Coulthart, Thompson opened up about the strange encounter caught by a CBP reconnaissance plane in early 2020.
He described the object as short, cylindrical, and eerily smooth — with no wings, no propellers, and no heat signature from an engine.
Even wilder? “The Cigar” wasn’t the only bizarre object Thompson and fellow CBP agents have seen soaring over the southern border.

“I’ve seen orbs off in the distance. I’ve seen cigar-shaped crafts. I’ve even seen triangles,” Thompson revealed. “But no one really talks about it. It’s still such a taboo topic.”
The footage left U.S. border patrol agents puzzled. Thompson said no one has figured out what the craft was — though some speculate it could’ve been a missile test. Still, there’s no solid answer.
What’s more chilling is what came after.
Thompson said there’s been total silence from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence since the sighting. No updates. No explanations. Nothing.
And it gets weirder.
Thompson claimed agents also witnessed a “portal” opening in the sky. “I was told there were pictures of it — and I saw one of them,” he said.
Reactions online were a mix of fascination and doubt. One viewer wrote, “You had me until the part about the portal.” Another joked, “Hundreds of millions spent on these cameras and the footage still looks like it came from a potato.”
“It’s a drone. Now you know,” one user guessed, trying to explain the mysterious sightings from late 2024 and early 2025. Many think these could be drones.
Back in January, a swarm of blinking UFOs lit up the night sky over northern New Jersey. The strange formations sparked fears the government was hiding something — maybe even an alien spy mission.
Local resident Mike Walsh described the scenes: “Squadrons of three to four UFOs started hovering in formation over Morris County last November. They’ve been back every night since.”
“I have no clue where they’re taking off from or landing,” Walsh said, baffled by the ongoing mystery.
Neighbor Julie Shavalier was just as shaken by the strange light shows. She said the sightings kept her up at night.
“We’re all completely unnerved,” Shavalier admitted. “I’d get up at 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., and they were still hovering.”
“They stayed even as the sun started to rise. Then they flew back the way they came. I expect they’ll be back once the sun sets again.”
The FBI’s Newark office later said their investigation pointed to “drones and a possible fixed-wing aircraft” behind the mysterious lights.
