The new pope has been selected, and his impressive salary has been revealed.
Following the death of Pope Francis at 88 on Easter Monday, a new pope has been chosen.
White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, signaling the conclave’s decision on the new head of the Catholic Church.
The conclave elected 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, he is the first U.S.-born pope and the 267th pope.
While the pope’s role carries immense responsibility, it also comes with impressive perks.
According to Fortune.com, the pope receives a €30,000 ($33,800) monthly salary, aligning him with U.S. presidents and university chancellors. This totals about $405,600 annually, as explained by Daniel Rober, a Catholic studies professor at Sacred Heart University.
Additionally, the pope’s living expenses are covered. He enjoys free meals, accommodation, use of the Popemobile, a private pharmacy, and more.
Though Pope Francis could have earned millions during his 12-year tenure, he famously donated his salary to those in need instead.
Rober shared with the outlet: “He’s someone who lived as a Jesuit for decades before becoming a bishop and continued to live in the same style throughout his life.”
It’s still unclear whether Pope Leo will accept the salary or where he will reside.
Typically, the pope lives in the Apostolic Palace, a luxurious gilded residence where all expenses, including meals, daily needs, and custom-tailored clothing by top religious outfitters, are covered by the Vatican.
Though entitled to the lavish quarters, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, famously chose simplicity, opting for a modest suite at the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse.
Francis preferred simplicity throughout his papacy, living in a two-room space instead of the traditional 12-room apartment, dining in the communal area, and using the papal library only for official meetings.
Other perks Pope Leo will receive include a $3,300 monthly retirement fund, access to the Popemobile, and coverage of all travel, security, and healthcare costs.
He will also have free access to Vatican medical services and a private pharmacy.
Although Pope Leo, an Augustinian friar who spent much of his life as a missionary in Peru, has yet to decide how he will live, many, including his own brother, believe he will follow Pope Francis’ example.
