Russell Brand has been formally charged with rape and sexual assault following a nearly two-year investigation prompted by multiple allegations.
The disgraced comedian faces charges related to historical offenses involving four women, alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.
The charges against Russell Brand follow a police investigation launched in September 2023 after several allegations were brought forward against the disgraced actor.
According to reports, the 49-year-old faces multiple charges, including the rape of a woman in 1999 and the oral rape and sexual assault of another in 2004. Additionally, he has been charged with indecently assaulting a woman in 2001 and sexually assaulting a different woman between 2004 and 2005.
Brand is scheduled to appear in court for his first hearing on Friday, May 2.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police, who is overseeing the case, said:
“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met’s investigation remains active, and we encourage anyone affected or with relevant information to come forward and speak to police.”
Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service stated:
“We have today authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offenses. After a thorough review of the evidence following a police investigation prompted by the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023, we concluded that Russell Brand should face charges, including rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault. These charges relate to non-recent offenses reported to have occurred between 1999 and 2005, involving four women.”
Narwal also emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of the legal process, saying:
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are now active, and the defendant is entitled to a fair trial. It is crucial that there is no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that could potentially prejudice these proceedings.”
Before charges were brought against him, Russell Brand left the United Kingdom for the United States and began aligning himself with former President Donald Trump.
Brand was reportedly spending time at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in early February, attempting to forge influential connections that could potentially shield him from extradition to the U.K.
An insider revealed just weeks before the charges were filed: “Brand isn’t naive—he’s aligning himself with Trump and his base to protect himself in case charges come down. He believes that if he’s close to President Trump, he’ll have his backing and could avoid being sent back to Britain.”
Demonstrating his allegiance, Brand was also spotted at Trump’s inauguration in January, marking the start of Trump’s second term in office.
In December 2024, Russell Brand revealed he had abandoned his long-time vegan lifestyle, even enjoying a steak while dining at Mar-a-Lago.
“My life’s changed quite a lot,” he told the camera. “I was just a vegan living a simple life in Grays, Essex. Now I’m eating steak at Mar-a-Lago! Funny how the world changes.”
Back in September 2023, shortly after news of the investigation surfaced, Brand posted a video on Instagram denying the allegations.
“I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters—one from a mainstream media TV company and one from a newspaper—listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks,” he said.
“But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.”
Brand insisted that all of his past relationships were “absolutely, always consensual.”
