Miley Cyrus has confessed to hiding the truth about her virginity from her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, for almost ten years.
The former couple initially met as teenagers in 2009 on the set of The Last Song, where their on-screen chemistry blossomed into a real-life romance.
They had an on-and-off relationship for years before getting engaged, breaking up, and eventually reconciling in 2016.
Two years later, in December 2018, they got married, but their union lasted less than a year before Hemsworth filed for divorce in August 2019.
During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the Hannah Montana star opened up about her early experiences with attraction and relationships. The 32-year-old shared that she was “attracted to girls way before [she] was ever attracted to guys”.
“I was like 11 or 12, my friends were starting to tell me what they were doing with guys and I didn’t really understand it, so I got most of my girlfriends to hook up with me,” she said. “The first time I ever hooked up with anyone was with a girl – two of them.”
She revealed that her first relationships went “past first base,” and that she “didn’t go all the way with a dude” until she was 16 years old.
“But I ended up marrying the guy, so that’s pretty crazy,” she said, basically confessing that she lost her virginity to Hemsworth, 35.
However, the Midnight Sky singer admitted that she was concerned the Land of Bad star would think less of her for being a virgin, so she lied and told him she had already lost her virginity to someone else.
“I couldn’t think of anyone, so I just made up a person I knew, but we had never actually had sex,” she revealed.
Cyrus managed to keep up the lie for years, but it eventually caught up with her. The truth came out when one of the Australian actor’s friends married the man she had falsely claimed to have slept with.
“Then [Hemsworth] was like, ‘Now my friend is marrying someone you’ve hooked up with,'” she recalled. “So, when I was around 24, I had to admit that I lied when I was 16.”
Although the Flowers singer and the Hunger Games star had been together for years, their marriage was brief.
Cyrus later reflected on why their relationship ultimately didn’t last. In her Used to Be Young TikTok series, she shared that she had a realization about their marriage during her performance at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2019.
“Liam and I’s commitment to being married, of course, came from a place of love first because we had been together for 10 years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could,” she explained, referring to the California wildfires that destroyed their home in November 2018.
However, by the time she performed at Glastonbury, she realized their relationship “was no longer going to work in [her] life.” Since then, Cyrus has prioritized putting herself first.
“That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first,” she said. “I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that not to be the case — that the human comes first.”
